Asinine Daydream
An album I wrote with my band, Blue Light District, during the 2018-2019 school year and recorded in the summer of 2019.
What I Did
I was the keyboard player in Blue Light District as well as a vocalist. All six of us in the band contributed to all of the songs on the album to some degree. My primary contributions to the music were the keyboard/organ/electric piano parts, lyrics, melodies, and backing vocals.
After the album was recorded, I focused on filing all of the required paperwork with the U.S. Copyright Office so that the album could receive copyright protection. I was also in charge of Facebook marketing and booking/promoting the album release party on August 23, 2019.
What I Learned
Going through this process taught me a lot as a creative and industry professional.
First, I learned how to get the ideas in my head out into the real world in a way that others could interpret and provide feedback. I was able to take hooks of songs I was hearing in my mind and play them for the rest of the band, and I recorded demo takes of melodies how I heard them while songs were in the writing process.
Second, I learned what the process and timeline for an album release looks like. I went through the processes of proofing mixes, building social media awareness, and promoting a release party. My efforts were successful, and the venue was filled to capacity when we took the stage at the release party.
Third, I experienced first hand what it actually takes to successfully register copyrights with the U.S. Copyright Office. I applied the skills and knowledge I acquired in my Copyrightt Law course at Belmont University, and I now have 24 copyrights to my name as a result.
