Who is Michael Smedley?

Michael is a music lover, sound designer/engineer, and keyboard player. He grew up in Bucks County, PA.

Michael attended Belmont University in Nashville, TN and studied Music Business during his freshman year of college.

After his freshman year, Michael transferred to Penn State University where he completed his B.F.A. in Theatrical Sound Design and B.A. in Telecommunications in 2022. Michael also earned minors in Music Technology and Business Law as well as a certificate of Business Fundamentals from Penn State’s Smeal College of Business.

Sound Designer & Engineer

Michael has been involved in live and recorded sound since 2012. He started as the “sound guy” for his middle school band, Casual Friday. He quickly became the top engineer at his high school and mixed countless plays, musicals, choir and orchestra concerts, and festivals during his high school career. In 2018, Michael got to work with Broadway and Disney actress Liz Callaway as her Front of House engineer during a performance at his high school.

In college, Michael studied Theatrical Sound Design at Penn State’s School of Theatre where he mixed and designed a number of university productions. During his time at Penn State, he was also part of the team charged with filling Beaver Stadium with synthetic crowd noise during the 2020 football season.

These days, Michael works on the Audio Systems Design team at Disney Live Entertainment in Orlando, Florida. He and the rest of the Audio Systems Design team design, implement, and maintain the sound systems that support theatrical shows, character dining performances, pervades, and night-time spectaculars at the Walt Disney World Resort and other Disney properties around the world.

Musician

Michael Smedley is an award-winning musician and live performer. His middle and high school band, Casual Friday, was voted the best band in Bucks County, PA in 2015. During his freshman year of college at Belmont University, Michael was a co-founder of the band Blue Light District. Michael and the rest of Blue Light District recorded, produced, and released an album titled Asinine Daydream in the summer of 2019.

During the spring and summer of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic caused mass lockdowns and quarantines, Michael started a weekly livestream concert series that quickly gained traction. Michael performed weekly from April until August to an audience of over 2,000 fans. He entertains crowds with his takes on classics from the greats such as Billy Joel, Journey, Bruce Springsteen, and Cold Play, among others. He looks forward to getting back into venues with fans after the COVID-19 pandemic is under control.
